At Freeport Medical Centre, we offer both Antigen and PCR tests for COVID-19.
The Antigen test for COVID-19 determines whether you are infected by detecting coronavirus proteins in the mouth and/or throat. Usually the patients nose or throat is swabbed and the sample is analyzed using a similar process to a pregnancy test.
The results are available within 15-20 minutes of doing the test; therefore, you can receive the results on the same day.
The PCR test, (Polymerase Chain Reaction), is a test which detects genetic material from the SARS-COV-2 Virus. It determines the presence of the virus in your body, The Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) test, analyses the sample and looks for RNA of SARS-COV-2.
The patients’ nose or throat is swabbed and sent to the lab. Upon receiving the sample, the laboratory technician extracts the genetic material from the sample and the sample is then tested using a PCR machine.
PCR testing is more accurate than the Rapid Antigen test however the results are available within 24 hours.
